Template vs differential: the strategy behind the score

Every FPL decision is a bet against the field. Owning the template means your rivals' hauls hurt less; owning differentials means their hauls hurt more but yours count double. The right balance depends on your situation: protecting a mini-league lead calls for more template, chasing a 500k rank deficit calls for calculated punts.

A useful rule of thumb: pick your differentials in positions where the template is weakest, and never differential your captain without a very good reason — the captaincy is where template protection matters most.

What the personality labels mean

Template King (80-100) — you are the meta. Playing It Safe (60-79) — mostly template with a few punts. Balanced Manager (40-59) — an even mix. Differential Hunter (20-39) — high risk, high reward. Chaos Merchant (0-19) — full send; when it works, it really works.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 'template' FPL team?+

The template is the set of highly-owned players that a large share of FPL managers all field — the premium captain options, the in-form mid-price picks and the popular budget enablers. A team built almost entirely from these picks moves with the crowd: safe when they haul, painful when a differential elsewhere goes big.

How is the template score calculated?+

We average the ownership percentage of your starting XI (weighted 80%) and your bench (20%) to produce a 0-100 score. 80+ makes you a Template King; under 20 is full Chaos Merchant. The position breakdown shows where your ownership concentrates — most managers are template in defence and differential up front, or vice versa.

Is a high template score good or bad?+

Neither — it's a strategy dial. High template protects rank (you rarely fall when everyone scores the same), which suits mini-league leaders. Low template is how you make big rank climbs, at the cost of variance. The mistake is not knowing which one you are — a 'safe' team with a couple of accidental punts, or a punty team that actually mirrors the crowd.

Where do I find my FPL Team ID?+

Log into fantasy.premierleague.com, open the Points tab, and look at the URL: it reads /entry/XXXXXXX/event/N — the XXXXXXX number is your Team ID. No password needed; the analyser only reads your public team data.

Does this work without an account?+
